New Jersey Assemblywoman Michele Matsikoudis announced that her proposal to form a Student Mental Health Task Force has passed committee unanimously. The initiative aims to develop school-based mental health best practices.
“The Assembly Education Committee voted 9-0 to advance my proposal to create a Student Mental Health Task Force,” said A Matsikoudis. “Grateful to Verlina Reynolds-Jackson for posting A276. We aim to craft best practices for NJ schools to provide students with the mental health support they need.”
Assembly Bill A276 establishes the Student Mental Health Task Force, which will study and recommend best practices for improving mental health services in New Jersey schools. The bill received unanimous approval from the Assembly Education Committee.
According to the New Jersey Department of Education, student mental health concerns have increased by 35% since 2020. This rise has prompted new legislation to expand counseling resources and staff training across the state.
A 2024 Rutgers University study found that one in five New Jersey high school students reported symptoms of depression, highlighting the need for stronger mental health infrastructure in schools.
Matsikoudis represents New Jersey’s 21st Legislative District and focuses on education, community safety, and policies supporting children’s mental and emotional well-being.
