Congressman Tom Kean Jr. announced on April 14 that his office is now accepting submissions for an essay contest to mark the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. The contest is open to all students in grades three through six who live in New Jersey’s Seventh Congressional District.

The event aims to encourage young students to reflect on their local history and its role in shaping the nation. Students are invited to respond to the prompt, “America’s Story Begins at Home,” by describing how their hometown contributed to America’s development, whether through notable people, landmarks, or events.

“New Jersey has a uniquely rich history and important stories to tell of our nation’s founding,” said Congressman Kean. “There are many historical figures, important places, and significant events that students can study and highlight in their essays. I am excited to host this new contest for elementary and intermediate school-aged students, and I look forward to reading their submissions.”

Students in third and fourth grades should submit essays no longer than 150 words, while those in fifth and sixth grades may submit up to 300 words. Winning entries will be displayed in Congressman Kean’s offices both in New Jersey and Washington, D.C., as well as published on his official website. The deadline for submission is Friday, May 8 at 5:00 PM; guidelines can be found on Congressman Kean’s website.

Kean has represented New Jersey’s Seventh Congressional District since replacing Tom Malinowski in 2023 according to Wikipedia. He previously served from 2001-2003 in the New Jersey General Assembly and from 2008-2022 in the New Jersey Senate as reported by Congress.gov. Born in Livingston, New Jersey, he is currently aged 54 and lives in Westfield according to Ballotpedia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College according to Biographical Directory of the United States Congress.

As communities across America prepare for this milestone anniversary, initiatives like this essay contest offer younger generations an opportunity both for civic engagement and local pride.
