Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1765, known as the Promoting United States Wireless Leadership Act, by a voice vote. This bipartisan bill was introduced by Congressman Tom Kean Jr. (NJ-07), Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06), Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05), and Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09). The legislation aims to enhance American technological leadership by fostering collaboration with trusted partners and promoting U.S. involvement in international standards-setting for 5G and future wireless communication networks.

Congressman Kean expressed his support for the bill on the House floor, stating, “As the global competition for 5G and wireless technology continues, the United States must lead—not follow.” He emphasized that this legislation ensures American innovation sets the standard for future wireless communications rather than foreign adversaries.

Congresswoman Dingell highlighted the long-term impact of current policy decisions on global wireless technology development, especially in competition with China. She stated, “We must take concrete, proactive steps to lower barriers to entry for U.S. companies and promote American competitiveness in this space.”

Congressman Walberg noted America’s longstanding leadership in cutting-edge technologies and stressed the importance of maintaining that role globally. He said, “By establishing clear rules of the road, we can protect against influence by foreign adversaries.”

Congresswoman Clarke underscored the priority of ensuring effective and stable 5G networks to maintain America’s global leadership in technology. She remarked on providing necessary cooperation and support from relevant bodies like NTIA as essential steps toward success.

The bill directs the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to encourage participation from trusted companies and stakeholders while offering them technical assistance.

Congressman Kean serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Communications and Technology where he focuses on broadband access, telecommunications policy, and emerging technologies.
