(March 7, 2025) WHARTON, NJ – Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-07) has urged the Department of Transportation (DOT) to address the ongoing issue of sinkholes affecting Interstate 80 in Wharton, New Jersey. The situation has led to significant traffic disruptions.

In December 2024, a sinkhole emerged on the eastbound lanes’ shoulder of I-80, necessitating a four-day closure for repairs. By early February, another road closure was required when a “depression” appeared in the roadway near the previous site. Investigations revealed a larger problem: a “void” under the eastbound lanes complicating repair efforts. To date, at least 134 additional voids have been discovered in the area, prompting concerns about future collapses and infrastructure stability.
