Representative Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey’s 7th District has introduced a new bill, H.R. 3771, known as the Protecting Coasts and Cities from Severe Weather Act. The legislation aims to enhance the observation, understanding, and forecasting of coastal flooding and storm surge events in areas deemed highly vulnerable.
The initiative seeks to improve the development and dissemination of precise forecasts and warnings to mitigate loss of life and economic damage caused by such weather events.
H.R. 3771 is part of a larger legislative effort encapsulated in H.R. 3816, the Weather Act Reauthorization Act, which Congressman Kean has also supported. This broader package focuses on enhancing communication and response strategies for severe weather occurrences.
Congressman Kean emphasized the importance of this bill for his state: “In New Jersey, we know what a devastating impact flooding can have on our communities, and it is imperative that we take proactive steps before severe weather strikes again,” he stated. He added that the act would bolster forecasting capabilities, providing essential tools for families, first responders, and local leaders to respond more efficiently during such crises.
Kean concluded by highlighting the benefits of improved weather observation systems in reducing impacts from severe weather events while ensuring better preparedness for communities when necessary.
