Today, Congressman Tom Kean Jr. introduced the Promoting United States Wireless Leadership Act of 2025 in Washington, DC. This bipartisan bill aims to enhance American leadership in technological standards by encouraging U.S. participation in global standards-setting for 5G and future wireless communications networks.

The bill is co-led by Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, Congressman Tim Walberg, and Congresswoman Yvette Clarke. Congressman Kean emphasized the importance of American innovation leading the race against adversaries in setting future wireless communication standards: “As the global competition for 5G and wireless technology continues, the United States must lead—not follow.”

Congresswoman Dingell highlighted the need for proactive measures to promote American competitiveness: “The policy choices of today will have lasting effects on the global wireless technology development of tomorrow — especially as we compete against China.”

Congressman Walberg stressed safeguarding America’s economic and security interests: “As foreign adversaries like China seek to assert influence over telecommunications technologies, we must ensure that wireless standards are made with America’s economic and security interests in mind.”

Congresswoman Clarke expressed her support for a unified approach to international standards-setting: “On both sides of the aisle, the urgency of securing American leadership in wireless technology is clear.”

The bill also directs the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to encourage participation by trusted companies and offer technical assistance.

Congressman Kean serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Communications and Technology. This is his second bill introduced for the 119th Congress.
