Congressman Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey’s 7th district has joined a bipartisan group of more than 30 House members urging Senate leaders to include the House in negotiations regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits, which are set to expire soon. The lawmakers sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer ahead of next month’s Senate vote, calling for collaboration between both chambers to address rising health care costs.
“Bipartisan engagement across both chambers will be essential to crafting a health care proposal that can pass and be signed into law,” the Members wrote.
The letter highlights concerns that families who rely on ACA premium tax credits could face significant increases in their health insurance premiums if action is not taken.
Kean has recently advocated for healthcare affordability in New Jersey. In September 2025, he became an original cosponsor of the Bipartisan Premium Tax Credit Extension Act (H.R.5145), which aims to extend these tax credits and protect families and small businesses from higher premiums. In October 2025, Kean also joined other Republican lawmakers in urging Speaker Mike Johnson to prioritize action on the expiring tax credits once the government reopened.
The bipartisan letter was led by Representatives Josh Gottheimer and Jen Kiggans, with additional signatories from both parties across several states.
Thomas Kean Jr., currently serving as U.S. Representative for New Jersey’s 7th district since 2023, previously served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2001 to 2003 and in the New Jersey Senate from 2008 to 2022. He was born in Livingston, New Jersey, in 1968 and resides in Westfield. Kean holds a BA from Dartmouth College.
