On Monday, Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-07) hosted a roundtable to address the escalating crime rates in New Jersey. The meeting was attended by County Sheriffs and Undersheriffs from Somerset, Union, Hunterdon, Morris, Warren, and Sussex.
Recent crime trends in New Jersey's suburbs have shown an increase in home break-ins, catalytic converter thefts, and robberies of local small businesses. Congressman Kean highlighted a recent incident where a carjacking suspect was on the loose along Route 22 in Union County. "Just last week, a carjacking suspect was on the loose along Route 22, putting lives at risk in Union County. Police advised residents to stay indoors and secure their doors," said Congressman Kean.
He further emphasized that addressing these crime outbreaks not only safeguards the well-being of businesses and children but also fosters an environment conducive to business growth. He expressed gratitude towards the law enforcement officials who attended the roundtable and affirmed his commitment to working together for community safety.
Sussex County Sheriff Michael Strada appreciated the opportunity to meet with Congressman Kean and other law enforcement officials to discuss issues affecting Sussex County residents. He found it beneficial to share concerns specific to each county and looked forward to future discussions.
Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon echoed similar sentiments. He acknowledged that people across New Jersey are being victimized by car thieves, home burglaries, and fraudsters. However, he expressed confidence that strong partnerships with likeminded individuals could help tackle these problems effectively.
In addition to hosting this roundtable discussion, Congressman Kean has been proactive in fighting rising crime rates through various legislative efforts:
- Introduction of the Fight Against Fentanyl Act
- Co-sponsoring Rep. Rutherford’s Protect and Serve Act of 2023
- Co-sponsoring Rep. Malliotakis’ Prosecutors Need to Prosecute Act

These efforts underscore Congressman Kean's commitment to enhancing law enforcement capabilities and ensuring community safety.
