On December 11, 2024, Congressman Tom Kean Jr. (NJ-07) addressed major U.S. artificial intelligence companies regarding significant security concerns within the industry. In letters sent to the CEOs of these companies, he highlighted a series of security lapses that pose risks to advanced AI technology.

Kean's correspondence emphasized the need for Congressional oversight and urged companies to outline their measures for preventing security breaches and protecting AI technologies. He also sought information on how these firms are adhering to commitments made to the White House and promoting a culture of security across the sector.

The letter cited several concerning incidents: allegations of a Google employee leaking sensitive trade secrets to Chinese entities, unauthorized access by a hacker into OpenAI’s systems, and Meta’s open-source AI models being utilized by Chinese companies to enhance their own capabilities. Kean warned that such breaches could lead to U.S. technological advancements being compromised by foreign adversaries, particularly highlighting threats from the Chinese Communist Party amid escalating espionage activities.

Congressman Kean requested detailed responses from each company on their plans to bolster product security and ensure transparency.
