Congressman Tom Kean Jr., Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, and Governor Phil Murphy visited the I-80 sinkholes in Wharton, New Jersey. The visit aimed to receive updates on the repair efforts by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). All lanes on I-80 are currently closed due to a new sinkhole.

"This is a critical issue that requires collaboration across all levels of government, and ensuring the safety of our residents remains our top priority," stated Congressman Kean. He emphasized the impact on commuters, local businesses, and infrastructure while advocating for federal resources to expedite repairs. "I thank Secretary Duffy and Governor Murphy for visiting today and making this a priority—we must all work together to reopen I-80 as soon as possible."

Secretary Duffy highlighted the regional significance of I-80: "I-80 is a critical artery that impacts not just the local community but the entire region." He mentioned that national geotechnical experts are assisting NJDOT in identifying and addressing the problem. "I want to thank Governor Murphy, Congressman Kean, NJDOT, and local leaders for their partnership, and I look forward to our continued collaboration."

Governor Murphy reiterated ongoing efforts: "As we assess the impacts of this new sinkhole on I-80, we will continue to work around the clock so that New Jersey commuters and families can get their lives back on track." He declared a State of Emergency in Morris County two weeks ago to access federal funding for repairs. "We understand the significant disruption that this has caused and remind everyone that the safety of New Jerseyans continues to be our top priority."

Earlier this month, Congressman Kean addressed a letter to DOT regarding multiple sinkholes affecting Interstate 80 in Wharton. He previously visited the site with Governor Murphy on March 8, 2025.

The issue began in late December 2024 when a sinkhole appeared along the eastbound lanes' shoulder, leading to a four-day closure. In early February, another closure occurred after discovering a depression near the initial site. Further investigations revealed a void beneath these lanes. On March 19, another sinkhole opened in the median causing westbound lane closures.
