Today, the Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) awarded Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. of New Jersey's 7th District the Legislator of the Year 2024 Award. This recognition is for his contributions to fire and emergency services, particularly through his efforts to pass legislation that reauthorized programs supplying essential equipment and resources to firefighters.
Congressman Kean expressed gratitude for the honor: “It is an honor to be recognized by the Congressional Fire Services Institute as Legislator of the Year.” He highlighted the daily risks faced by firefighters and EMS personnel, noting his own experience as a former volunteer firefighter. Kean emphasized his commitment to supporting these professionals through legislative measures like the Fire Grants and Safety Act of 2024, which has become law.
Bill Webb, Executive Director of CFSI, acknowledged Congressman Kean's support: “The Congressional Fire Services Institute thanks Congressman Kean for his work to support America’s fire and emergency services.” Webb noted that the Fire Grants and Safety Act plays a crucial role in maintaining essential fire service grant programs and supporting personnel nationwide.
The recently enacted Fire Grants and Safety Act provides a five-year reauthorization for key programs such as the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), Assistance to Firefighter Grants (AFG) Program, and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant (SAFER) Program.
