Flemington, NJ – After several years of delay primarily caused by a clerical error, the Flemington Fire Department has regained its non-profit status from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This development was announced by Congressman Tom Kean, Jr., whose office played a pivotal role in resolving this issue.
The effort to regain the tax-exempt status began with former Chief and President Robert Motzel reaching out to Congressman Kean’s office. The reinstatement was essential for the fire department, which serves the Borough of Flemington and surrounding areas and has done so since 1842. The delay, which lasted six years, severely impacted the department's ability to secure necessary funding and resources.
Congressman Kean stated, "I am pleased that we have secured a long-overdue victory for the Flemington Fire Department. This organization has served its community with honor and dedication for over 175 years, and the restoration of its non-profit status will ensure it can continue protecting residents with the resources it needs."
Acknowledging the help received, Robert Motzel expressed relief and gratitude by saying, "I’d just like to say thank you in assisting us in the process. I thought this issue would never ever get resolved."
Flemington Mayor Marcia Karrow also praised the efforts, noting, "Congressman Kean’s help in reinstating their charitable not-for-profit status is key in their ability to apply for important grants for fire fighting equipment that both save lives and taxpayers dollars."
Since the establishment of Congressman Kean’s office in January 2023, it has handled over 3,500 constituent cases, recovering more than $18 million for residents of New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District.
